Magical Things to Do in Queensland, Australia: Insider Tips & Hidden Gems | Travel

Things to do in queensland

Looking for fun things to do in Queensland? Or not sure if you want to visit Queensland? Or wondering which state is the best place to start your trip to Australia? Well, this list of unforgettable and magical experiences in Queensland will convince you to come right away. From “the most beautiful beach in the world” to the Great Barrier Reef to surfing paradise (quite literally, the city), it’s an easy sell. I feel pretty lucky that my boyfriend is a Queensland native, so I was able to have the best possible experience in this incredible Australian state during my visit.

Where and What is Queensland?

Queensland is located in the northeastern part of Australia and is known for its stunning beaches, tropical islands, lush rainforests, and vibrant cities. It’s a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Imagine lounging on pristine beaches, exploring underwater worlds, and hiking through ancient rainforests—all in one state!

To give you a better idea, Queensland is bordered by New South Wales to the south, the Northern Territory to the west, and the Coral Sea and Pacific Ocean to the east. Its diverse landscape offers everything from bustling urban centers to tranquil, remote escapes. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural experiences, Queensland has it all.

How to Get to Queensland

Queensland is easily accessible both domestically and internationally. Major airports include Brisbane Airport (BNE), Cairns Airport (CNS), and Gold Coast Airport (OOL). If you’re flying within Australia, there are frequent flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and other major cities. Internationally, you can fly directly to Brisbane from destinations like Los Angeles, Singapore, and Dubai.

For those preferring a scenic route, driving is a great option. The Pacific Coast Way offers a beautiful drive from Sydney to Brisbane, with plenty of charming stops along the way. Additionally, there are train services like Queensland Rail that provide a relaxing travel experience. The Spirit of Queensland train journey, in particular, is a fantastic way to see the coast.

Getting Around

While Queensland has good public transport options in its cities, renting a car is highly recommended to explore the hidden gems and more remote areas. Having a car gives you the freedom to reach secluded beaches, national parks, and other attractions at your own pace. Trust me, driving along the coast with the ocean breeze and stunning views is an experience in itself.

Weather in Queensland

Queensland enjoys a diverse climate. The coastal regions have a tropical and subtropical climate, perfect for beach activities year-round. The best time to visit is during the Australian winter (June to August) when the weather is mild and ideal for outdoor adventures. The summer (December to February) can be hot and humid, especially in the tropical north. Pack light clothing, sunscreen, and don’t forget your swimwear!

I personally think that Queensland has the best weather in all of Australia. Sunny skies, warm waters and weather…it’s just perfect!

Best Time to Visit Queensland

The best time to visit Queensland largely depends on what you want to do. For the Great Barrier Reef, whale watching, and other outdoor activities, the winter months (June to August) are ideal. This is when the weather is cooler, and there’s less rainfall. If you’re looking to enjoy the beaches and vibrant nightlife, spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are also great times to visit.

I visited during the Summer (December to February) and I thought the weather was perfect (but I like it hot!)

15 Amazing Things to Do in Queensland

There is no shortage of things to do in Queensland, that’s without a doubt. While this is highly contended within Australia, I think it’s the best state to visit. I mean, it does have the Great Barrier Reef, and that’s pretty hard to beat.

1. Great Barrier Reef – Experience of a Lifetime

No trip to Australia is complete without visiting the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s most sought-after destinations. It truly is one of the most incredible things you’ll see in your lifetime. While Australia is doing its best to preserve it, you should visit sooner rather than later to witness its remarkable colors and marine life.

Although the Great Barrier Reef is not a “hidden gem,” experiencing it the right way is a hidden gem. Many people are unaware of its vastness and don’t know where to find the best snorkeling spots. Thanks to my native Queensland boyfriend, I had insider tips to create the best experience. We snorkeled at secluded spots, saw vibrant coral, and swam alongside a myriad of colorful fish and even a few turtles!

2. Whitsundays Islands – The Most Beautiful Beaches in the World

While the Great Barrier Reef is quite famous, and rightfully so, personally I think that the Whitsundays are ranking pretty high in the incredible level. They are truly some of the most people beaches in the world and it truly feels like paradise. Turquoise waters with white sands and beautiful beaches.

It is an unmatched experience. The Whitsundays contain 74 islands, but you can only really stay on Hamilton Island (where we stayed). You can visit the famous Whitehaven Beach know for its powdery white silica sand and crystal clear waters and the Hill Inlet on Whitsunday Island itself – one of the most beautiful views you can see in life. Twirling waters creating a labrinyth of colors – unforgettable.

If you want the full experience of the gorgeous Whitsundays you should really consider taking a sailing trip through the islands for an island hopping and unforgettable few days. Enjoy the tranquility and beauty of these islands and their unmatched sunsets.

3. Moreton Island – Sunsets, Camping, and Dolphins

Perfect for a day trip or an extended camping experience, Moreton Island was one of the highlights of my Australis trip. Some of my best memories were from the few days we spent on the island. Moreton Island offers activities like sand tobogganing, surfing, dolphin watching, and snorkeling at shipwrecks. We camped right on the beach and woke up to the sound of waves and dolphins playing in the surf. The island’s diverse landscapes and activities kept us entertained and amazed.

There are no actual paved roads on this island, so you need 4WD to navigate the sand roads. This was the best part of the experience for us, the fun and adventure of driving on the sand. Just try not to get bogged!

4. Hike the Hinterlands and their Waterfalls

The hinterlands of the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast feature stunning hikes with waterfalls, blue yabbies, and unmatched sunsets. Some of the most famous hikes include Kondalilla Falls, Lamington National Park, and the Glass House Mountains. Even if you don’t go to one of the most famous hikes, you’ll be sure to find some beauty and wildlife, just like this blue yabbie we found.

5. Gold Coast Beaches – A Surfer’s Paradise

Australia is famous for surfing, so why not go to a place famous for surfing in Australia – the Gold Coast. Surfers Paradise, Kirra, Coolangatta, Tugun, Burleigh, Currumbin Alley, Greenmount, and Snapper Rocks are must-visit spots. We spent weeks here surfing, sunbathing, and enjoying the lively beach atmosphere. The Gold Coast is also home to fantastic dining and shopping options, making it a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

If you’re in the area, stop by Currumbin Wildlife Center to hold a koala (since they’re hard to spot in the wild).

6. Noosa in the Sunshine Coast

Enjoy the beach, delicious food, boutique shopping, and even, if you’re there at the right time of the year, a dog surfing competition! Noosa’s laid-back vibe was perfect for a relaxing getaway. Walk through the streets or relax at the beach, or enjoy the local markets and artisan shops.

7. Eumundi Markets – Local Markets

Discover handmade, local products at this vibrant market, a hub for small businesses and artisans. Wandering through the Eumundi Markets is a sensory treat, with colorful stalls, the aroma of fresh food, and live music. We picked up unique goodies and enjoyed chatting with friendly local vendors.

8. Brisbane – The Most Underrated City in Australia

Often considered the most underrated city in Australia, Brisbane offers a mix of vibrant city life, cultural experiences, and beautiful riverside parks. We explored its eclectic neighborhoods, visited world-class museums, and enjoyed riverside dining. The city’s laid-back yet cosmopolitan vibe was refreshing and made it a memorable stop on our trip.

9. Wilderness Experience – Lots of Kangaroos

Visiting Spicers offers a fun experience in the Australian “wilderness” without having to drive hours to the outback. Not only did we get to see kangaroos in their natural habitat (and lots of them), but we also enjoyed thrilling activities like dirt biking and exploring charming small towns that felt like stepping back in time.

10. Fraser Island – Largest Sand Island in the World

If you liked the idea of Moreton island, then you can take it to the next level with Fraser island, the largest sand island in the world. It’s a bit more remote and harder to get to, so it’s probably not the best for first timers, but if you want a challenge it’s sure to be a lot of fun. You can enjoy 4WD and discovering lakes like Lake McKenzie. Just be careful of the dingos and stay up to date with warnings!

12. Carins and the Daintree rainforest – The Oldest Rainforest in the World

Cairns is the gateway to the Daintree Rainforest, the world’s oldest rainforest, renowned for its unparalleled natural beauty and biodiversity. Start your journey with the Kuranda Scenic Railway, offering a breathtaking ride through lush landscapes and cascading waterfalls. Once in the Daintree, guided walks will enhance your appreciation of this ancient ecosystem, allowing you to spot rare plants and exotic animals.

13. Simpson Desert and Birdsville Camel Races

The Simpson Desert, with its vast red dunes and stark beauty, offers a dramatic contrast to Queensland’s coastal regions. Visit during the Birdsville Races, an iconic event that brings a lively atmosphere to this remote outback town. Exploring Munga-Thirri National Park reveals unique flora and fauna adapted to the harsh desert environment, providing a fascinating insight into this rugged landscape.

14. See Baby Sea Turtles at Bundaberg and Mon Repos Conservation Park

Bundaberg, known for its rum distillery, offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore not only the world-famous drink but also the natural wonders of the region. In addition to the Mon Repos Conservation Park, there are stunning botanical gardens, historical sites, and beautiful beaches to discover. The region’s rich history and diverse wildlife provide ample opportunities for exploration and enjoyment. This makes Bundaberg a compelling destination for travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation.

15. Undara Volcanic National Park

Undara Volcanic National Park is home to one of the longest lava tube cave systems in the world, offering a unique and educational experience. Exploring these ancient formations, created by volcanic activity over 190,000 years ago, is both fascinating and informative. Guided tours provide valuable insights into the geological history and unique ecosystem within the lava tubes. The park’s distinctive landscapes and the thrill of exploring the lava tubes make it a standout destination in Queensland, appealing to geology enthusiasts and adventurers alike.
