Dreaming of a unique and stylish bikini that fits you like a glove? Why not make your own crochet bikini? It’s not as daunting as it might seem, especially if you have some basic crochet skills. Imagine lounging by the pool or catching waves in a swimsuit you crafted yourself. With a bit of patience and creativity, you can whip up a stunning crochet bikini in just a few hours. Ready to get started? Let’s dive in!

Can you swim in a crochet bikini?
Yes! Although I was a bit skeptical in the beginning, I could not be more pleasantly surprised by how well my crochet bathing suit holds up in the water and the sun. It’s become one of my go-to swimsuits for every occasion. Whether I’m kayaking, surfing, swimming, or sunbathing, it holds up beautifully. I don’t even really see a real difference in dry time between this bathing suit and others.
Adding a lining to my bikini made it even sturdier and more comfortable, though it’s not a must. I’ve traveled the world in mine, and it’s still going strong after over a year of use. So, yes, you can swim in a crochet bikini, and it will keep up with all your adventures!
What yarn should you use to make your crochet bikini?
The yarn is by far the most important part of this project. While you can use just about any yarn to make your crochet bikini, using cotton yarn is going to make a world of difference. It is cool, not itchy, and dries very quickly. It is also less likely to fray after getting wet and drying again.
Don’t know where to buy yarn? Usually, any craft store will carry cotton yarn, but if you’re looking to have everything ready to go, check out our Make Your Own Bikini Kits – Makini by Colorful Sisters. Sign up to get on the waiting list for your own easy to make crochet bikini kit!
Can a beginner make a crochet bikini?
Definitely! Most bikini patterns are surprisingly simple and perfect for beginners. If you’re just starting, you might need a bit of patience, but don’t be discouraged. With repetitive stitches and straightforward designs, it’s a great project to build your confidence. Watching tutorial videos and following step-by-step guides can also be incredibly helpful.
How long does it take to make a crochet bikini?
The time it takes to complete your bikini depends on your crochet skills and speed. For seasoned crocheters, it can be done in just a few hours. Beginners might take a bit longer, but the process is enjoyable and the result is worth it. It’s a quick and fun project compared to more time-consuming ones like sweaters or dresses.
Steps to making your own crochet bikini
It’s as easy as 1,2,3…or something like that. But really, you can crochet your own bikini in just a few steps.
#1 Choose a pattern
There are countless patterns available online. But my personal favorite crochet bikini pattern is the one that I designed after making quite a few bikini tops (and not really liking any of them). I used my experience and crochet expertise to design the perfect crochet pattern that is simple, comfortable, and easy to make: Join the waitlist for the pattern release here.
#2 Choose yarn (cotton, cotton, cotton)
You’ll need one to two spools of cotton yarn, depending on the complexity of the pattern and your size. Follow the pattern’s guidelines, but if you’re improvising, two spools should be sufficient. Check the recommended hook size on your yarn label to ensure you’re using the right crochet hook.
#3 Crochet and crochet some more
Now comes the fun part – crocheting! This project is relatively fast and straightforward, making it perfect for crafters of all levels. Take your time to ensure each stitch is even and consistent. Remember to take measurements and try on the pieces as you go to ensure a perfect fit.
#4 Line the bathing suit for better use in the water
If you want your bikini to be functional for swimming and not just sunbathing, I would suggest lining it. I chose to line both the top and the bottom of the bathing suit. In my opinion, it makes it a bit sturdier and also feels more comfortable for everyday wear. The crochet stitches of this bathing suit were not particularly loose and I could have worn it without lining, but compared to the bathing suits I have that were unlined, it is much more comfortable with lining.
Cut a piece of lining fabric to match the shape of the bikini cups and bottoms, and sew it in place, folding the edges of the lining under as you go. You can do this by hand or with a sewing machine. I was making this particular bathing suit while on a long train journey so I sewed it by hand (which is great if you don’t have a sewing machine).
Tips for care and maintenance of your crochet bikini
To keep your crochet bikini looking fabulous, rinse it in fresh water after each swim to remove chlorine or salt. Hand wash it gently with mild soap, avoiding harsh detergents. Lay it flat to dry to maintain its shape. With proper care, your handmade bikini will last through many sunny seasons. I have put my bathing suit in the washing machine on a gentle cycle many times and it has still held up very well, but if you want to keep your work in perfect condition, handwashing is the safer choice.
