Dead Sea

Hold your breath…. We’re going below sea level to the Dead Sea with our handmade bathing suits!

The Dead Sea is the lowest place on earth! The shores are 423 meters (1,388 ft) below sea level…. We had planned to go to the dead sea a million times in the past two years (its a two-hour drive from our house) and somehow EVERY SINGLE time it got canceled and we couldn’t go. So we planned the trip again and of course all the sudden there’s a heat wave…and I mean 45 degrees Celsius (113 f) for a whole week kind of heatwave….so we were going to cancel yet again BUT WE DID NOT! We decided to go despite it all.

We’ve been to the Dead Sea many times before and generally know the scenery, so a couple weeks before the trip we started designing the bathing suits for the trip. We already had in our minds the color scheme that we wanted.

Danielleโ€™s swimsuit: brown and white striped high waisted bikini to contrast the beautiful teal waters of the dead sea… But also to match the huge white banks of salt and brown healing mud…

Brooke’s swimsuit: open backed teal one-piece that is just a little more teal than the dead sea so as not to blend in, but teal enough to not take away from the incredible scenery.

Here are some more fun facts about the dead sea:

  1. Scared of sharks? No worries the Dead Sea is called the Dead Sea because of the amount of salt in the water is so high that no aquatic organisms (like fish or plants) can survive…only tiny bits of bacteria and microbial fungi are present.
  2. You can really only float in the Dead Sea – Its 4th saltiest body of water in the world and the water is 34% salinity which makes you float. IT’S SO FUN
  3. Dead Sea waters are known to have amazingly beneficial minerals so people come from around the world to soak in its goodness. We love to cover ourselves in dead sea mud and then you come out super soft and smooth.

Disclaimer: The Dead Sea is an amazing location and beyond beautiful but I don’t really recommend going in the summer months becauseeeeee……Firstly it was 50 degrees Celsius (It is located in a desert after all) Secondly… the water looks really refreshing, but it is a bit of an illusion. We all know that salt makes water boil faster… WELL IT’S THE SAME THING AT THE DEAD SEA! The water was not really a refreshing jump but rather (especially in the dead of summer) HOTTTTT on top of hot. And last but not least…during the summer there are very very unpleasant biting gnats that terrorized us the entire time. That being said PLEASE go during the 9 other non-summer months of the year and it will be much more enjoyable. I’m sure you’ll still have fun in the summer, but I promise you it’s much much more enjoyable in the non summer months.

Have you ever been to the Dead Sea?

Sending love and happiness, Brooke and Danielle, Colorful Sisters
